About Father Suthers
Father Derwent SuthersSuthers Center is named after Father Derwent Suthers of St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church, who has been a tireless supporter of those in need and instrumental in making the Brookhaven Christian Ministries coalition of churches what it is today.  He epitomizes the positive impact we can make when we roll up our sleeves and work together in Christ’s name.

Father Suthers grew up a Methodist in Ohio, became an Episcopalian at Oberlin College, and went to seminary at Union in New York City, and the Church Divinity School in Berkeley, CA.

He began his ministry in Michigan, where he led a small congregation to parish status and built a church.  Later, he spent three years in Brazil as a missionary in Rio, and as the Church World Service representative in Recife with a social service program. Upon returning to the United States he served 17 years in Planned Parenthood regional offices (San Francisco, Philadelphia and then as Regional Director here in Atlanta).

He was active in supply and interim ministries in Atlanta, then moved to Utica, New York where he spent 11 years in dual roles heading an infertility organization and as associate, then Rector of a parish. After returning to Atlanta in 1997 he returned to full-time ministry at St. Martin in the Fields, where he initiated Stephen Ministry, DOCC, and Lay Eucharistic Minister visitation. He also served on the Global Mission Committee of the diocese, until his retirement in 2010.
